Establishing an Independent Public Advocate
Feedback received
Detail of feedback received
The Independent Public Advocate will be established by the government and placed on a statutory footing as the proposals received overwhelming support from those who responded to the consultation.
The consultation period closed on 3 December 2018 and the summary of the responses are available here, in addition to details of how the consultation process influenced the final policy. The government carefully considered all responses to this consultation and made adaptations based on the responses.
The government is, and will remain, committed to placing the bereaved at the heart of processes and the Independent Public Advocate will be key to helping deliver this.
Consultation description
The government is committed to introducing an Independent Public Advocate who will act for bereaved families after a public disaster and support them at inquests and inquiries.
This consultation sets out our proposals for the role of the Independent Public Advocate, exploring how they might best support bereaved families, and potentially others, to enable them to fully understand and engage in the investigation following a disaster. It seeks views on when the support of the Independent Public Advocate should be available, what investigations the role will cover and who will be eligible for support.
This consultation is aimed at people who have been bereaved or otherwise affected by a public disaster; the organisations that support them; organisations and services involved in investigating disasters; and anyone else affected by or with an interest in the issues in this consultation.
