Detail of outcome

Summary of responses received and the government’s response to the consultation.

We have now published the revised statutory guidance on home-to-school travel.

We have made the guidance clearer, to help local authorities fulfil their school travel duties in relation to children of compulsory school age.

The new guidance includes improvements on:

  • considering if a parent can be expected to accompany their child
  • encouraging independence for children with disabilities
  • managing children’s medical needs

Consultation description

The revised guidance seeks to clarify local authorities’ statutory duties in relation to home to school travel and transport policy for children of statutory school age, in response to feedback from local authorities and other interested parties.

The policy for transport to post-16 education and training is different from that of children of compulsory school age, and as such is not included within this consultation. Separate guidance for post-16 travel is available at Transport to education and training for people aged 16 and over.
