Hunting trophies: call for evidence
Detail of outcome
We received over 44,000 responses to this call for evidence and consultation. Based on the results, we will be banning the import of hunting trophies from:
- species on Annex A and B of the UK Wildlife Trade Regulations
- additional endangered and threatened species not covered by these regulations but subject to hunting and of particular conservation concern
We will bring forward this new legislation as soon as parliamentary time allows and will be setting out our detailed plans for action soon.

13 October 2020: The consultation and call for evidence received 44,470 responses. The COVID-19 emergency set the timetable back, as many of our officials formed part of the response to the pandemic. However, we’re continuing to work on this important area and will publish a response as soon as we can.
Original call for evidence
Call for evidence description
We are seeking evidence on the impacts of trophy hunting and the import and export of hunting trophies to and from the UK. In particular, we’re looking to understand:
- the number of hunting trophies entering and leaving the UK
- the effect of stricter controls on UK businesses
- effects of trophy hunting
- existing restrictions in other countries
This call for evidence is being held at the same time as our consultation on controls of the import and export of hunting trophies. We will use the information from both to determine whether further action is required.
Update: The closing closing date has been extended by 1 month to 25 February 2020.
