Insolvency statistics: methodology
Read the full outcome
Detail of outcome
On 29 October 2015, we will implement the following changes:
- Count company insolvencies in the period they began, rather than when they were registered at Companies House.
- Estimate the number of insolvencies in the latest period by extrapolating from partial data.
- Provide a comparable time series back to 2008 initially, and further back as resources allow.
- Publish statistics on administrative receiverships, but not on other receivership appointments.

Consultation description
The Insolvency Service’s statistics team has reviewed the method used to count the number of company insolvencies, and identified some weaknesses.
This consultation contains proposals for changing the methods, and invites views on revisions and the length of historic data required.
This consultation also contains proposals to change statistics on receiverships, to break them down into insolvent and non-insolvent receiverships.
