Special Protection Areas (SPAs) are special sites designated under the EU Birds Directive to protect rare, vulnerable and migratory birds.

This site already protects internationally important populations of:

  • storm petrel
  • lesser black-backed gull

The proposal for the Isles of Scilly is to extend the SPA to protect internationally important breeding populations of:

  • European shag
  • great black-backed gull
