Detail of outcome
The consultation, ‘Mechanisms and governance for overseeing the recruitment and conduct of justices of the peace’ has provided the first opportunity since 2008 to review the structure and operation of advisory committees in light of changes to the way magistrates and their business are managed.
The key benefits that will result from the consultation are:
- clarification of the responsibilities regarding the recruitment and alleged misconduct of magistrates in England and Wales, to ensure the investigation of alleged misconduct is dealt with objectively, fairly and efficiently and all applicants to the magistracy are subject to a consistent, robust and transparent recruitment process
- the creation of new structures that better reflect the way magistrates are organised
- the creation of accessible support teams with knowledgeable staff
- greater emphasis of the constitutional connection between the magistracy and the Sovereign by strengthening further the link between the magistracy and Lord-Lieutenants
