Detail of outcome

After analysing the 424 consultation responses we received, we reached a decision that the following night-time noise abatement objective will be in place for the next night flight regime to start in October 2025:

To limit, and where possible reduce, the adverse effects of aviation noise at night on health and quality of life while supporting sustainable growth and recognising the importance to the UK of commercial passenger and freight services.

Further details are contained in the Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted night flight restrictions consultation published in February 2024.

Consultation description

The Secretary of State is required to define a night-time noise abatement objective for noise designated airports (Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted) where a noise problem has been identified.

For the purpose of the next night flight regime, due to commence in October 2025, this consultation seeks views and evidence on what the night-time noise abatement objective should be.

Once a night-time noise abatement objective for the designated airports has been decided upon, we will then be able to identify the most cost-effective measures for achieving the desired outcomes and present them in a main consultation on the next night flight regime. This consultation is expected to launch in late 2023.
