Consultation description

We are seeking feedback on an application by Nexus for 4 specialist Metrocars, used on the Tyne and Wear Metro network, for exemption to certain Rail Vehicle Accessibility (Non-Interoperable Rail System) Regulations 2010 relating to:

  • passenger door buttons
  • audio visual warnings
  • wheelchair space specifications
  • provision of manual boarding ramps
  • door threshold lighting
  • dimensions of priority seating
  • the location of the interior door handrail

This exemption would apply to the vehicles numbered 4001, 4002. 4040 and 4083 only.

The reason for the exemption is because the cars, although un-refurbished, are required to remain in service in order to meet Nexus’s service timetable obligations, especially at peak times.
