Consultation description

The Department for Transport is seeking feedback on an application from London Underground Limited for an exemption from a standard set out in the Rail Vehicle Accessibility Regulations (RVAR) 2010. The exemption concerns trains operated on the Northern Line and relates to the provision of a single handrail at single leaf passenger doors.

Background to RVAR exemption applications

Applications for exemption from the standards mandated by the RVAR received by the Department for Transport are subject to stakeholder and public consultation. Rail vehicles (trains) which must comply with these standards include light rail, metros and trams. RVAR is directly applicable to all new vehicles built after 1 January 1999. Vehicles built before 1999 have until 1 January 2020 to comply.
