Applies to England

This consultation has concluded

Detail of outcome

After a period of consultation, the Environment Agency has decided to change the Statutory Main River map across various areas throughout England to correct known inaccuracies in the Main River map as per the proposal notice, with the exception of a small number of locations where we are maintaining the existing alignment following public objections

The Environment Agency is making this change as a ‘determination’ under section 193C(1) of the Water Resources Act 1991. This determination represents a formal decision to change the main river map.

The main river map will be formally changed to reflect the determination on 1 August 2022.

Consultation description

The Environment Agency consults the public about proposals to change whether a river or stream is designated as a main river. The Environment Agency carries out maintenance, improvement or construction work on main rivers to manage flood risk. Main rivers are usually larger rivers and streams.

Details of proposed change

The Environment Agency proposes to change the existing Statutory Main River map across various areas across England. The proposed changes will correct known inaccuracies from the Main River map.

It proposes these changes as a ‘determination’ under section section 193C(1) of the Water Resources Act 1991. A determination is a formal decision to change the Main River map.

These changes mean that the map would show the correct location of the watercourse. They do not change who has power to carry out flood risk management work on the watercourse.

How to view the proposed changes

You can see the proposed change on the Main River map.

The proposed change is shown as a ‘Consultation’ red line on the map.

If you are unable to view the online map you can request to view the proposed changes in an Environment Agency office. To request an appointment please email mainrivers@environment-agency.gov.uk or call 03708 506 506
