Climate Adaptation Research and Innovation Board (CARIB)
The Climate Adaptation Research and Innovation Board (CARIB) provides strategic oversight of adaptation research in the UK.
Composition of the Board
CARIB is co-chaired by Dame Angela McLean, the Government Chief Scientific Adviser, and Gideon Henderson, the Chief Scientific Adviser of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, with representatives from:
- Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs
- Department for Science, Innovation and Technology
- Department for Energy Security and Net Zero
- Department for Transport
- Department for Business and Trade
- Met Office
- UK Research and Innovation (UKRI)
- Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities
- Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office
- Department of Health and Social Care
- Ministry of Justice
- Cabinet Office
- Environment Agency
The Devolved Administrations also attend Board meetings, and the Board has recruited independent members from outside government. The independent board members are:
- Jim Hall, University of Oxford
- Rowan Douglas, Howden Group
Role of the Board
CARIB was established to ensure coordinated development of research and innovation (R&I) activity to support effective climate adaptation across the UK through the development of a Climate Adaptation Research and Innovation Framework (CARIF). The Board continues to sit while further work is being carried out on CARIF and it will disband once mechanisms for ongoing implementation and maintenance have been agreed.
