Dangerous goods international engagement

Team within the Department for Transport with responsibility for the policy for the safe and secure carriage of dangerous goods.

We lead on the policy for the safe and secure carriage of dangerous goods by road and rail. We also have oversight for sea and air modes.

Aims

Our aims are to ensure:

  • a regulatory infrastructure designed to enhance the safe and secure transport of dangerous goods
  • regulations are proportionate and implemented in the UK in a way which helps to improve trade and economic growth

What we do

To do this we:

  • represent the UK at international meetings
  • negotiate international regulations and European directives

These negotiated regulations and directives are then incorporated into our national policy.

Between international meetings, we hold public gatherings discussing proposed changes with industry experts.

If you want to attend a gathering you must contact us 2 weeks before the stakeholder briefing meeting date. Current meeting dates are:

*24 to 28 March 2025: joint meeting of the RID committee of experts and the working party on the transport of dangerous goods. The stakeholder briefing meeting is 5 March 2025 * 5 to 9 May 2025: working party on the transport of dangerous goods (117th session). The stakeholder briefing meeting is 23 April 2025 * 30 June to 4 July 2025: Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) sub-committee of experts on the transport of dangerous goods (66th session).
