Defra DNA Centre of Excellence
The Defra DNA Centre of Excellence (DNA CoE) is a virtual hub bringing together expertise on DNA based tools for monitoring the environment.
The Defra DNA CoE comprises of member organisations that use DNA based tools for monitoring the environment, biodiversity, ecosystem functions and responses to changes within these. The DNA CoE is run by Defra.
Our role
The DNA CoE promotes the understanding, application and development of innovative DNA and genomics approaches and technology to transform environmental monitoring in support of Defra priorities.
The DNA CoE does this through:
- demonstrating novel and innovative DNA and genomics approaches through a managed portfolio of research and development projects
- collaborating in Defra, wider government and beyond to leverage expertise, accelerate research and facilitate knowledge transfer
- building capability through raising awareness understanding of genomics applications through outreach, training, and engagement

Our working group
The Defra DNA CoE working group meets on a 6 weekly schedule and works in collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders.
The scope of the DNA CoE working group activities include:
- delivering technically excellent projects which push the boundaries of existing DNA capability and demonstrate new applications in delivering Defra group priorities
- accelerating the operational development of DNA technology, both through horizon scanning of emerging technologies, and cross-cutting collaboration to share successes and reduce duplication of work
- building DNA capability for the purpose of monitoring across the Defra group through knowledge-building initiatives, training opportunities and enhancements in infrastructure
- providing a platform for peer review of activities within the scope to encourage innovation and knowledge sharing
- building relationships with national and international groups or organisations to share knowledge and work synergistically where possible
