Equity in medical devices: independent review
The review, which has now concluded, advised the government on the health impact of potential ethnic and other biases in medical devices and made recommendations for more equitable solutions. The final report was published on 11 March 2024.
The panel of the independent review, which has now concluded, was chaired by Professor Dame Margaret Whitehead. Dame Margaret holds the WH Duncan Chair of Public Health at the University of Liverpool. Previously, she has led the work of the World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre for Policy Research on the Determinants of Health Equity from 2005 to 2020.
As well as contributing to various UK and international efforts to address social inequalities in health, she chaired the Independent Inquiry into Health Equity for the North of England (the Due North report).

Call for evidence
The panel of the independent review opened an 8-week call for evidence on Thursday 11 August 2022. The call for evidence closed on Thursday 6 October 2022.
This call for evidence aimed to collect existing data and evidence as well as information on ongoing data collection and research or evaluation projects. This call for evidence was particularly relevant to those who engaged in any way in the design, development, evaluation and use of medical devices. The call for evidence also welcomed insights and views from the members of the general public, patients and carers.
