Interim Devices Working Group

The Interim Devices Working Group replaces the Devices Expert Advisory Committee (DEAC) and is responsible for providing independent, external expert input and advice on a wide range of aspects relating to medical devices to help MHRA ensure the safe introduction and management of medical devices.

The Interim Devices Working Group (IDWG) is a working group formed in autumn 2022 to provide expert advice regarding decisions on the safety, performance, benefits and risks of devices in use in the UK healthcare system, prior to the launch of the statutory committee under the Medicines and Medical Devices Act 2021 in 2023.

Functions

The proposed functions of the IDWG are:

  • to advise MHRA on matters relating to medical devices including signal validation, advice on the safety, performance and quality of medical devices including advice on the steps up to and including moves to remove medical devices from the UK/GB market - in addition, there should be scope to provide advice on pre-market processes such as clinical investigations
  • to create and maintain oversight of specialist groups
  • any other matters relating to medical devices

The IDWG will review its performance against these core activities on an annual basis.
