Net Zero Innovation Board
The Net Zero Innovation Board provides strategic oversight of government funding of net zero innovation programmes.
Composition of the Board
The Net Zero Innovation Board is chaired by Professor Dame Angela McLean, the Government Chief Scientific Adviser, with representatives from:
- Department for Energy Strategy and Net Zero
- Department for Science, Innovation and Technology
- Department for Business and Trade
- Innovate UK
- Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs
- UK Research and Innovation (UKRI)
- Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities
- Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office
- Department for Transport
- Ofgem
- Met Office
HM Treasury are observers.
The Devolved Administrations also attend Board meetings, and the Board has recruited independent members from the private sector.
The Independent Board members are:
- Ian Simm (appointed May 2019 and extended until May 2025), Impax Asset Management, Founder and Chief Executive
- Beverley Gower-Jones (appointed June 2022 and ending in June 2025), Clean Growth Fund, Managing Partner
- Philip Taylor (appointed June 2022 and ending in June 2025), University of Bristol, Pro Vice-Chancellor Research & Enterprise
Role of the Board
The Energy Innovation Board was set up in November 2016 to provide an opportunity to collaborate at a strategic level on energy innovation. In December 2020, the Board revised its Terms of Reference to encompass innovation related to delivery of the UK’s net zero ambition and was renamed the Net Zero Innovation Board.
Its role is to:
- provide strategic oversight of public programmes on energy innovation
- identify opportunities for enhanced collaboration on both UK and international energy innovation priorities
- ensure that government spend is aligned with government priorities
- provide clear recommendations to ministers and others across government (with ownership of the mechanisms) to address issues identified by the Board
