Occupational Pensions Stewardship Council
The Occupational Pensions Stewardship Council promotes and facilitate high standards of stewardship of pensions assets.
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is no longer acting as the secretariat of the Occupational Pensions Stewardship Council (OPSC). The Council is currently looking to merge with the Asset Owners’ Roundtable. More information will be available in due course.
The Asset Management Taskforce brings together government, senior representatives from asset management, regulators and key stakeholders. Their 2020 report, Investing with Purpose, recommended that a ‘dedicated council of UK pension schemes should be established to promote and facilitate high standards of stewardship of pension assets.’ (Recommendation 16).
In response to this recommendation, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has created an Occupational Pensions Stewardship Council.
The council provides schemes with a forum for sharing experience, best practice and research, and providing practical support.
The council will develop a stronger overall voice of trustees within the market, especially in relation to service providers. It also enables opportunities for schemes to collaborate on stewardship activities such as shareholder resolutions, climate change, corporate governance and other topics.
DWP welcomes interest in the council from all UK occupational pension schemes – including the Local Government Pension Scheme – with the exception of those schemes which are open to multiple unconnected employers and are sponsored by firms that sell investment management services to other schemes. This will facilitate the open sharing of best practice and collaborative engagement activity.
