28 artists participate in an exhibition on Mahatma Gandhi in Delhi
The works of India's best known artists will be displayed to reflect the life and work of Mahatma Gandhi on 13 December 2014 in New Delhi.
For the first time ever, the works of India’s renowned artists will be displayed together in a charity exhibition and sale in Delhi, to raise money for the Mahatma Gandhi statue in London.
This unique endeavour has brought twenty eight artists together who are generously sharing the proceeds of the sale to install the sculpture of Mahatma Gandhi at Parliament Square in London.
Lord Meghnad Desai who has set up the Gandhi Statue Memorial Trust to raise money for the Gandhi sculpture from all around the globe said:
It is a wonderful gesture on the part of these renowned Indian artists, who are supporting not only the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Parliament Square, but also the work of a fellow artist and sculptor, Philip Jackson, who has created the statue.
This reaching out between India and UK, through these artists, is only befitting, because Gandhi belongs to the whole world. He spent his early life not only in India, but also in London. Indeed, many of the works in this exhibition and sale reflect the international influence that the Mahatma continues to enjoy…in art, in philosophy, in politics. I would urge all admirers of the Mahatma from around the world to buy these wonderful pieces of art, and add to a historical legacy.
Among the major artists whose work will be displayed, include M F Husain, Jogen Chowdhury, Manu Parekh, Raghu Rai, Jatin Das, Haku Shah, Arpana Caur, K S Radhakrishnan, Paresh Maity, Atul Dodiya, Sanjay Bhattacharya, Jagannath Panda, G R Iranna, B.Manjunath Kamath, Veer Munshi, Subba Ghosh, Seema Kohli, Parthiv Shah, Chandra Bhattacharjee, Dimpy Menon, Sudhanshu Sutar, Sudip Roy, Amit Pasricha, Apurva Desai, Anu Malhotra, Sharmi Chowdhury, Mainaz Bano & Suraj Kumar Kashi.
Many of these artists have taken the time out from their busy schedules to specially create a painting or a sculpture inspired by the Mahatma.
Art Alive Gallery, New Delhi is specially organising the charity event for the Gandhi Statue Memorial Trust for raising funds for the Mahatma Gandhi statue. The exhibition is being curated by Sunaina Anand, one of the country’s most respected art promoters who has played a critical role in the development of the art sector.
Curator and gallery owner, Sunaina Anand , who has worked closely with many of the artists in preparing the exhibition said:
The Mahatma’ is a special show where Indian artists have come forward to pay their tribute to Gandhiji, who’s philosophy has touched hearts across the globe. We hope that the works created especially to support the fund raising, will also enrich the collections of the art lovers.
The exhibition and sale which will be held at the British High Commissioner’s residence, 2 Rajaji Marg, New Delhi, India.
The paintings will be displayed for sale after the inauguration, and will also be available online for purchase on websites Gandhi Statue and Art Alive Gallery.
