Funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and local partner organisations Bank of the Philippine Islands Foundation, Unilever Philippines, Megaworld Corporation, GlaxoSmithKline Philippines, HSBC, Monde Nissin, Shell, PruLife UK, Jollibee, and Cambridge Trust, Chevening scholarships enable outstanding emerging leaders to pursue a one-year master’s degrees in their field of expertise at any UK university. The programme provides leaders a unique opportunity to advance academically, develop professionally, build networks, and explore the UK and its culture through fully-funded scholarships.
Over the last 35 years, 50,000 outstanding professionals have had the opportunity to develop in the UK through Chevening. The Philippines has sent 440 Chevening scholars since 1984.
Numerous Chevening alumni continue to rise to prominent positions in the country. Notable alumni include Congressman Ron Salo (University College London), Ambassador of the Philippines to the World Trade Organisation Manuel Teehankee (London School of Economics and Polticial Science), Commission on Human Rights Chair Chito Gascon (University of Cambridge), broadcast journalist Howie Severino (University of Sussex), Peace Advocate Anna Tarhata Basman (Durham University) and University of the Philippines President Danilo Concepcion (Queen Mary University of London).
British Ambassador to the Philippines Daniel Pruce said:
The UK is home to some of the world’s best universities, brightest students, and most respected academics.
The UK’s higher education sector promotes the exchange of information and ideas, and fosters independent thinking as well as the building of knowledge and networks. Chevening Scholars find themselves immersed in that world, and emerge having grown academically, professionally and personally. In 2015, a study found that 131 Nobel Laureates pursued their higher education in the UK.
Chevening Scholars share the best their country has to offer with those they meet in the UK, and then share the best the UK has to offer when they return home. The role that the Chevening community plays in building bridges between countries is as important now as it has ever been. I congratulate the Chevening scholars from the Philippines and wish them the very best of luck with their studies in the UK.
