ACCIA now recruiting for regional sub-committee scorers

ACCIA is recruiting for volunteers to join its scoring panel for the 2024 national Clinical Impact Awards round.

The national Clinical Impact Awards are prestigious awards granted to NHS consultants who go over and above, demonstrating national and international clinical impact that is of benefit to the NHS.

Regional sub-committees have been set up with a variety of professional, employer and non-medical members to score applications fairly and equitably per region. All of ACCIA’s scorers are volunteers and bring a breadth of knowledge and experience to their roles and their regional sub-committees.

Benefits of joining

By joining an ACCIA sub-committee, you will:

  • contribute to the outcome of the prestigious national Clinical Impact Awards competition
  • learn first hand about new and exemplary research, teaching and delivery that is being carried out in your region and nationally
  • gain valuable insight into the workings of Clinical Impact Awards - this is particularly helpful for employer members, who can feed back general advice on applications to their consultant body
  • enjoy the exchange of views at the scoring meetings, which often examine the challenges faced by professionals and their peers

Who ACCIA is looking for

To continue delivering a successful service in 2024, ACCIA is looking for scorers from a variety of backgrounds, including from both medical and non-medical professions, who understand the NHS from any perspective, be that professionally or through experience.

We are recruiting for:

  • professional members (practising doctors and dentists) who can consider applications from a peer’s point of view - this includes consultant doctors, dentists and academic GPs who are eligible to apply for an award
  • employer members (managers from trusts and arm’s length bodies or other organisations) who can consider applications from an employer’s perspective
  • lay or non-medical professional members (independent members) who will be knowledgeable about the workings of the NHS and may have lay involvement in healthcare and experience of the patient’s perspective

ACCIA is keen to ensure that the demography of the sub-committees is representative of the consultant population and is therefore especially keen to try to increase the gender and ethnic diversity of our regional sub-committees.

Training and support

All sub-committee volunteers, from a medical or non-medical background, are provided with extensive training and support to ensure they can score applications fairly and equitably, to the best of their ability and free from bias. This includes:

  • group training with ACCIA’s chair and medical director
  • comprehensive scoring guides
  • one-to-one support

Time commitment

Time commitment in total for the awards round would be:

  • 7 to 8 days scoring up to 70 applications in a 6-week time frame
  • half a day for training (from February to March 2024)
  • half a day for the regional committee meeting (later in the year)
