The British Consulate General in Jerusalem held a reception in Ramallah to launch the Sirius Programme for young entrepreneurs. The event was attended by the UK Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy to the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Baroness Morris of Bolton, who is visiting Jerusalem and the West Bank to boost UK- Palestinian trade and business links.
Many Palestinian fresh graduates from different universities in the West Bank attended the reception to learn more about the programme. The Sirius programme is led by the UK Department for Trade & Investment. It targets global graduates with entrepreneurial ambition and offers them a complete package to get their business off the ground in the UK.
The British Consul General Dr Alastair McPhail said in a short remark:
It’s a pleasure to see here today a lovely crowd of young men and women who share the love for creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship. During the six months I have been here so far, I have been really impressed by the brightness, ambition and strength against all obstacles shown by the younger generation. I’d like stress how important it is for the British Consulate in Jerusalem to invest in and empower young Palestinians. They are the backbone and the future leaders of the future Palestinian state. It’s part of our efforts to help build a strong, open and accountable Palestinian Government, a thriving private sector, and a dynamic civil society. It is a rewarding investment.
Overall the Sirius winners will be able to take advantage of the UK entrepreneurial ecosystem, a collaborative environment where like-minded entrepreneurs come together and grow. Other advantages of starting up in the UK include access to the number one venture capital market in Europe and to 500 million customers across Europe.
