Alistair Burt expresses concern over execution in Vietnam

Foreign Office Minister Alistair Burt deeply concerned to see the death penalty resumed in Vietnam.

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

Foreign Office Minister Alistair Burt said:

I am deeply concerned that Vietnam has resumed the use of the death penalty having carried out an execution on Tuesday 6 August, the first since 2011.

The UK opposes the use of the death penalty in all circumstances as a matter of principle and the resumption of executions in Vietnam runs contrary to the international trend towards worldwide abolition.

We have raised our opposition to the death penalty with the Vietnamese government. We urge Vietnam not to carry out further executions.
