Ambassador Davidson meets with President of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal

The British Ambassador to Guatemala, Carolyn Davidson, paid a courtesy visit to the President of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE), Mario Ismael Aguilar.

Ambassador Davidson and President Aguilar discussed diverse aspects of the current Electoral and Political Parties Law and preparations for the 2019 elections.

The Ambassador welcomed the renewed and most recent attention of President Aguilar on promoting greater transparency and strengthening the capacity of the TSE to address anomalies.

In the UK’s centenary year of women getting the vote, the Ambassador also discussed with the TSE the importance of greater female political participation to ensure a truly representative democracy.

Finally, Ambassador Davidson and President Aguilar discussed the key role of the TSE in ensuring that the law is respected and that the TSE’s independence is vital to guaranteeing a peaceful and democratic electoral process.
