Ambassador verifies UK’s donation to volcano eruption victims
The British Ambassador Carolyn Davidson visited three shelters in Escuintla to verify the deployment of the donations to people affected by the Fuego Volcano eruption.
Ambassador Davidson undertook a tour to the shelters of Iglesia Pan, Vino y Aceite; Simón Bergaño; and La Ceiba, all of these in Escuintla. The shelters are receiving assistance from the British Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) Action Against Hunger.
Action Against Hunger works worldwide to provide access to clean water, food and basic sanitary services. The NGO was granted more than 400,000 quetzals from the Start Fund, which receives financing from the governments of the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium and the European Commission.
More than a thousand people have benefited from access to basic personal hygiene equipment, showers and portable toilets, which contributed to their well-being and avoided the spread of illnesses. Since the emergency began, Action Against Hunger has been on the scene proposing solutions to the crisis.
After this visit, the British Ambassador, Carolyn Davidson, said:
I am impressed about the capacity of reaction of international and humanitarian organisations on this crisis in conjunction with the government of Guatemala. I also congratulate the resilience of the affected people and their desire to rebuild their lives. The United Kingdom stands by the Guatemalan people and is willing to continue providing the necessary assistance.
Besides the contribution to the Start Fund, the British Government has made available around 200,000 quetzals to give technical assistance to the scientific authorities in Guatemala (INSIVUMEH) in charge of monitoring risks and preparation of future emergencies scenarios.
