Ambassador Watt bids farewell to the Egyptian Chevening Scholars
The British Ambassador honoured this year’s Egyptian recipients of the prestigious Chevening Scholarship and awarded certificates to 27 returning scholars.
Ambassador James Watt paid tribute to the 27 returning scholars and 24 new scholars who have been given this unique opportunity to study for their one year Masters Degree in a variety of fields including International Law, Economics, International Journalism, Sustainable Development, Business Administration, International Relations, Finance and Public Policy at some of the most prestigious UK universities and educational institutions.
During the reception the Ambassador emphasised the importance of this Scholarship programme and educational exchange for both the UK and Egypt, with it representing one facet of the bilateral cooperation and one way Britain expresses its friendship with Egypt. The Chevening Scholarship Programme, funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, has been running in Egypt since 1986, and in that time over one thousand young Egyptians have benefited. These young Egyptians return to Egypt with enhanced skills and first-hand experience of living in a different and stimulating culture. Many work for private companies, both international and Egyptian. Others are in the public sector or work for non-governmental organisations.
Through the continued support of valued local partners, British Gas Egypt, British Petroleum Egypt, HSBC, Vodafone Egypt and Zaki Hashem and Partners, this year’s scholars will undertake fully-funded Master’s degree programmes at leading universities in the UK, including at LSE, University of Nottingham, University of Manchester, University of Sheffield and Edinburgh University. Courses of study vary from creative writing and journalism, to public administration and development policy, to business and economics.
