British Ambassador discusses green economy with Uzbek students

Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Uzbekistan Mr George Edgar, OBE, delivered a guest lecture on “Greening Britain’s economy” for students of the Banking and Finance Academy of Uzbekistan.
Around a hundred BFA students and academic staff attended the lecture. In his presentation Ambassador Edgar covered the concept of a green economy and the British government’s policy, regulations and incentives designed to develop a low carbon economy in the UK. Ambassador Edgar also spoke about the impact of climate change on economic development, as well as methods – and economic benefits – of improving energy efficiency across the economy.
Speaking to the audience the Ambassador said:
The British Government takes environmental and climate issues very seriously. The key questions are how to make sure that the costs of environmental damage are reflected in economic and financial decision making, and how to use market mechanisms to find the most efficient ways of responding to problems.
The lecture provoked a lively discussion and Ambassador Edgar answered additional questions from students and academic staff.
The Ambassador’s presentation on green economy contributed to developing cooperation between the British Embassy and the BFA. The recent examples of cooperation include master classes for the BFA students on audit, finance, securities and taxation held by experts from the University of Bath and London Metropolitan University in 2014 and 2012, as well as donation of a number of textbooks in 2013 for the BFA library, which were sponsored by the British Embassy.
