British Ambassador welcomes release of Ibrahim Sharif following a royal pardon
The UK Government welcomes the early release from prison of Bahrain opposition leader Ibrahim Sharif following a royal pardon by His Majesty King Hamad yesterday.
As Minister for the Middle East and North Africa, Tobias Ellwood MP, said in his Ramadan message to the people of Bahrain earlier this week, Ramadan is a time for peace and reconciliation. The pardoning of Ibrahim Sharif is a welcome step in the process of promoting trust and confidence.
The UK Government regularly raises the importance of reform and reconciliation with the Government of Bahrain, as Mr Ellwood did during his recent visit. We are providing support to Bahrain to strengthen human rights and the rule of law. The UK remains committed to supporting reform in Bahrain.
