British and Uzbek Foreign Ministers discuss bilateral cooperation
The Foreign Minister of Uzbekistan Abdulaziz Kamilov visited the UK from 20-22 November.
During his visit he met the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, The Rt Hon William Hague MP and Senior Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, The Rt Hon Baroness Warsi. The Minister also met Dr Andrew Murrison MP, Parliamentary under Secretary of State and Minister for International Security Strategy at the Ministry of Defence. Minister Kamilov also visited the Houses of Parliament and met members of the House of Lords.
The purpose of the visit was to deepen the relationship between the UK and Uzbekistan with discussions that covered regional security, human rights, education, trade and investment.
Minister Kamilov also attended the 20th session of the annual Uzbek-British Trade and Industry Council (UBTIC) on 21 November where discussion covered current trade and investment and the potential for developing bilateral trade. UBTIC is co-chaired by the Uzbek Minister for Foreign Economic Relations Elyor Ganiev and The Rt Hon Peter Lilley MP.
This was the first time a Foreign Minister of Uzbekistan has visited the UK since 2002. It follows visits to Uzbekistan by Senior Minister of State The Rt Hon Baroness Warsi in June 2013 and by Secretary of State for Defence, The Rt Hon Philip Hammond in February 2012.
