British Embassy and Embassy of Canada hosted Mental Health event
British Embassy Quito and Embassy of Canada, in collaboration with the Ecuadorean Ministry of Health, organised a full-day workshop on healthcare services.
The British Embassy Quito and the Canadian Embassy, in collaboration with the Ecuadorean Ministry of Health, organised a full-day workshop on the different healthcare services offered to Ecuadoreans and foreign tourists and residents, including in the fields of mental health and addiction to drugs and alcohol.
The 45 attendees included consular officers from the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, USA, Colombia and Peru, along with officials from public and private organisations: Ministries of Health, Interior, Justice, Tourism, psychiatric hospitals, Tourism Police and the Municipality´s Patronato San Jose.
The MoH’s talks explained the legal context in Ecuador concerning health, promotion and prevention in the mental health system, providing details about ECU 911 emergency service provided until patients are stable, and healthcare services to prisoners, both physical and mental. In addition, they explained procedures to follow if treatment is required in mental health cases, and presented case studies regarding addiction to alcohol and other drugs.
The workshop familiarised consular officers with latest local procedures and expanded contacts with key authorities responsible for healthcare and assistance, further strengthening the cooperation that required to handle complex consular cases involving vulnerable foreign nationals.
