British Embassy brings sustainable energy to the Añangu Kichwa community
The British Embassy Quito supported a solar power project in Yasuní National Park, bringing sustainable energy to the Kichwa community of Añangu.

On 31st March, Ambassador Patrick Mullee inaugurated the project. In his opening speech he dedicated some words to the community in the native language, Kichwa. The community celebrated the launch of the project with dances, wearing traditional collars made of seeds, characteristic of their culture. Gabriel Castellanos, alumnus from the University of Leeds, supervised the installation of the solar facility, which has brought sustainable energy to the community and reduced reliance upon diesel fuel. Now, areas that previously used diesel for power, like the teachers’ room, the students’ room, the communal room and other important areas, have renewable energy, further contributing to the sustainable development of this community within one of the world’s most biodiverse areas.
