British home nations teams celebrate together ahead of the Commonwealth Games

Ahead of the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, the British Consulate Brisbane invited representatives from the seven British home nations teams to celebrate their participation in the ‘friendly games’ and reflect on the strong sports ties between Australia and all corners of the UK.

At a booked out business lunch in Brisbane, representatives from Team England, Team Scotland, Team Northern Ireland and Team Wales shared Games preparations and insights in what was a rare opportunity for the teams to unite before they compete against each other at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. The panelists were:

British High Commissioner to Australia, Her Excellency Menna Rawlings CMG said over 1,400 British athletes and tens of thousands of supporters were expected on the Gold Coast during the Commonwealth Games. She said:

The Brits are not short on teams to support during the Commonwealth Games, as we’re represented by individual teams from England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man,

There is always such intense competition and interest whenever the UK and Australia meet in any sporting arena – the Gold Coast will highlight this great sporting rivalry, with British athletes competing across all 18 sports and seven para-sports.

I’m sure all home nations teams and supporters will receive a warm welcome in Queensland, just as the Australians did in Glasgow in 2014 and will once more when Birmingham hosts the Commonwealth Games in 2022.

But the Commonwealth Games are about much more than the UK and Australia. They are a unique celebration of sport but also of the Commonwealth itself – a global and diverse network of 53 countries, representing a third of the world’s population, 60% of whom are under 30 years old.

The lunch was organised as part of the UK Government’s GREAT campaign, in partnership with the Australian British Chamber of Commerce.
