British LGBT activist shares message with Guatemala
Guatemalan LGBT representatives and partner organizations met at the British Residence to discuss human rights.
The discussion centred on a video message sent by British LGBT activist, Peter Tatchell. Tatchell has been a human rights defender since 1967 and through his foundation has denounced and protested against LGBT repression around the world.
He summarized his experience as an activist in the UK and shared examples of how his organization has accomplished important milestones. Tatchell encouraged Guatemalan organizations to work collectively and develop strategic partnerships in order to continue successfully advocating LGBT rights.
The meeting was attended by several Guatemalan organizations from the LGBT community, OHCHR, the Guatemalan Ombudsman Office (PDH), and the Human Rights Prosecutor’s Office.
To mark the event, the British Ambassador to Guatemala, Carolyn Davidson, said:
Working collectively not only increases our effectiveness, but also helps to further the goal that LGBT persons be able to live safely, freely, and without discrimination. The United Kingdom will continue to focus its efforts on combating human rights abuses against LGBT persons wherever they occur, to ensure that all persons are free to lead their lives with dignity and equality.
The British Embassy is also joining activities in support of Pride Month, which takes place in June in Guatemala and around the world.
