Buenos Aires hosts the first Latin American Chevening Alumni Conference
The Latin American Chevening Alumni Network was launched Thursday to Friday, 7 to 8 March at the British ambassador’s residence.
The event was an initiative of the Argentine Chevening Alumni Association and the British embassy in Buenos Aires, which gave rise to a very positive response from Latin American alumni. All participants showed a keen interest in developing new links and strengthening the existing ties among regional alumni.
Chevening alumni from 10 countries (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela) flew in especially for the conference and representatives of the British embassies in some of these countries also took part in the event.
The Conference, financed by the FCO’s (Foreign & Commonwealth Office) Chevening Alumni Fund, provided an opportunity for alumni groups or associations from each of the participating countries to share experiences, lessons and ideas. With the help of experts, participants discussed the development of the Chevening Network and regional interest areas, and possible ways to set up a Latin-American network.
Chevening alumni from 10 countries were present at the conference (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela).
All delegates left with practical ideas and a commitment to develop Chevening alumni associations in their respective countries. Concrete steps were agreed towards the formation of a Latin American Chevening Alumni Network.
During the workshops, participants heard presentations by Rosendo Fraga, an expert on Latin America; Andrés Borenstein, the FCO’s Regional Economist, and Agustín Salatelli, a communications consultant and former Chevening scholar.
Hugo Swire, the FCO minister for Latin American, who is also responsible for the Chevening Scholarships at global level, sent a message to participants, which was shown during the reception hosted by the British ambassador in Buenos Aires, John Freeman.
