Call for institutional links proposals in Chile
Grants for the development of research and innovation collaborations between the UK and Chilean Regional Centres.

As part of the Newton Fund, in collaboration with the Chilean National Commission for Scientific and Technological Research (CONICYT), the British Council is calling for joint UK-Chilean proposals. The deadline for applications is 27th November 2014, at 5pm (Chilean continental time).

The Programme is divided into two separate calls, led respectively by the British Council and the Chilean National Commission for Scientific and Technological Research (CONICYT). Applicants can only apply to one.
1. British Council-led call
The British Council-led call has a focus on projects that stimulate new relationships between research groups at UK and Chilean institutions. Moreover, these relationships should, where possible, demonstrate tangible social and community benefits, particularly for lower-income and more vulnerable social groups, when tackling global challenges – such as extreme weather conditions, urbanisation, access to affordable health care, food and energy security and meeting the social and economic needs of a growing and ageing population.
2. CONICYT-led call
The CONICYT-led call will focus on projects that develop initiatives and technologies with commercial potential. In particular, this call looks to the Principal Applicants to work with commercial actors (especially Small and Medium Enterprises) to translate research knowledge into tangible economic benefits.

About the opportunity
Regional Institutional Links are grants for the development of research and innovation collaborations between a Chilean Regional Centre and a UK Higher Education Institution or public-sector research centre (or a Catapult Centre).
Grants will be £30,000 to £100,000 per proposal over 4-12 months. Grants can cover costs which support research and innovation collaboration, including:
- research-related costs
- the exchange of researchers, students and industry staff (including SMEs and not-for-profit organisations)
- the costs of organising meetings, seminars, training
- other activities to establish and strengthen collaborative links.
Other activities can also be funded. For a full list of eligible and ineligible costs, please look at the guidelines for your specific call (British Council or CONICYT).
Eligibility
Proposals must fulfil the following criteria in order to be eligible for funding under this Programme:
- Each proposal must have one Principal Applicant from the UK and one Principal Applicant from Chile.
- Under this call, only Regional Centres (i.e. the 13 research centres funded through Programa Regional) are eligible to apply as the Chilean Principal Applicant.
- The Regional Institutional Links Programme looks to develop a core relationship between the Chilean Principal Applicant (i.e. the Regional Centre) and a UK Higher Education Institution or public-sector research centre (or a Catapult Centre).
- The Programme also looks for these principal counterparts to form a wider consortium, including one or more Associated Partners.
- Both of the Principal Applicants’ institutions must have the capacity to administer a grant.
To support the translation of research and innovation into benefit, Principal Applicants are encouraged to include in their proposals Associated Partners affiliated with:
- Other research or higher education establishments
- Technology transfer offices
- Not-for-profit organisations (including non-governmental organisations (NGOs)
- For-profit/commercial organisations, including small and medium enterprises (SMEs)
