Clarification on student loans for Bulgarian students in the UK
When a maintenance loan is frozen pending provision of further information, tuition loans are also suspended until those facts are provided.
Further to enquires we have been receiving on the suspension of student loans for Bulgarian nationals studying in the UK, we would like to make a clarification to the information issued on 22 November 2013. In particular, following representations made by Bulgarian students, we have learned that we incorrectly stated that tuition fee loans were not affected. Whilst the vast majority of tuition loans remain unaffected, in cases where a maintenance loan has been frozen pending provision of further information, tuition loans are also suspended until that information is provided. We apologise for this mistake in our previous statement.
We would like to clarify:
- The UK welcomes students from all over the world.
- Following an unexpectedly sharp rise in applications for student maintenance loans, EU national students in the UK who are claiming maintenance loans on the basis of being resident in the UK for 3 or more years have been asked to provide further evidence of eligibility. During this time both maintenance and tuition fees will be suspended. Once students have provided proof of their eligibility both loans will be unfrozen and paid as normal.
- EU students who have applied for tuition fee loans only, or who have applied for maintenance support on the basis they are a migrant worker, are unaffected by these checks.
- If any students are found to have made fraudulent applications, they will lose all their support (tuition fees and maintenance) and be banned from claiming student support in England permanently.
