Outreach

As part of our country-wide consular outreach programme, Consul Tina Hamilton and Pro Consul Anneka Dann visited the provinces of Chimborazo and Tungurahua to make personal contact with the local authorities and tourism officials in the area, in the towns of Riobamba and Baños respectively.

Attendance in both provinces was excellent with representatives from the Police, Fire Service, Red Cross, Municipality, Ministries of Tourism, Environment and Risk Assessment, among others. We gave a brief presentation about the work of the Consular section, focusing on our assistance policies, responsible tourism campaign and crisis plan, while also introducing our Consular Agents in each province. The Consular Agents are British residents in different parts of Ecuador who act as a link with their region and the consular section of the British Embassy, working on a completely voluntary basis.

The information was well received and followed by a lively question and answer session. It was very encouraging to learn more about some of the security systems in place in these well-visited provinces, for example the registration of visitors to the national parks and the process for assessing the alert status of the Tungurahua volcano.
