It is a year to go until Afghanistan’s crucial 2014 elections. The country has made significant progress over the last decade and continues to do so. The UK and international community have made a long term commitment to Afghanistan’s future, but the country continues to face complex social, political and economic challenges. Political reform must continue, leading to more effective and accountable institutions and a cleaner government. A peaceful transition of power in 2014 supported by the majority of Afghans needs to happen through credible and inclusive elections.
