Deputy Head of Mission visits Karakalpakstan
Deputy Head of Mission at the British Embassy in Tashkent, made a short visit to Karakalpakstan on 27 September.
Alison Beckett, Deputy Head of Mission at the British Embassy in Tashkent, made a short visit to Karakalpakstan on 27 September. She held a range of meetings in Nukus with a local women’s non-governmental organization, representatives of international organizations implementing humanitarian projects in the region and with the Director of world renowned Savitsky Art Museum.
The Karakalpakstan Branch of the Business Women’s Association of Uzbekistan briefed Mrs Beckett about the organization’s activities in the region which aims to develop entrepreneurial skills among local women and support their business projects through training, consulting and micro credits. Mrs Beckett was shown samples of handmade goods crafted by the Association’s members and discussed possible joint projects with the British Embassy which could further develop local women’s business expertise.
Mrs Beckett also held meetings with representatives of UNDP and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) working in the region, who explained in detail the work they are doing with local authorities on healthcare issues, especially in rural areas.
Mrs Beckett was invited to tour the Savitsky Museum which hosts the world’s second largest collection of Russian avant garde art and the largest collection of archaeological, folk, applied and contemporary arts’ artefacts from Central Asia. Mrs Marinika Babanazarova, Museum’s Director, explained the history of the Museum, the work of its founder and the current construction works to extend museum premises. Mrs Beckett looked forward to further co-cooperation between the Savitsky Museum and cultural organisations in the United Kingdom.
