Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said:

As the Jewish ‘Festival of Lights’ begins, I wish the community in the UK and across the world a happy and peaceful Chanukah.

Tonight families will gather to light the first candle on their Chanukkiah, reminding us of the great resilience of the Jewish people. The story of a small amount of oil burning brightly for eight days carries a powerful message of liberation from oppression and the importance of religious freedom.

That the Jewish community continues to go from strength to strength, is testament to your dynamism and the vibrancy of your culture and traditions.
