Drainage improvements on A20 near Dover
A project to improve drainage on the A20/A260 between the Roundhill Tunnel and the Courtwood Interchange near Dover, Kent, is due to begin on Monday 7 September.
The Highways England scheme, which will take place between 8pm and 6am (Monday to Friday only), is required as drainage equipment has reached the end of its operational life and needs to be replaced in order to maintain road user safety and to prevent future potential flooding.
The work will affect the A20 between Roundhill Tunnel and Courtwood Interchange, as well as the entry and exit slip roads at the A20/A260 junction at Alkham Valley. Some lane and carriageway closures will be required, starting on the eastbound carriageway before moving onto the westbound side.
At certain times during the work, the road will need to be closed overnight in both directions between the Roundhill Tunnel and Alkham Valley. Clearly signed diversions will be in place via the A259 and the A260, and the dates for the closures will be announced in advance.
Highways England Project Manager Kevin Bown said:
This is vital maintenance work which will improve drainage and help to prevent possible flooding issues in the future. We’re carrying out the work overnight as we know that is when traffic levels are at their lowest.
On those occasions when we have to close a carriageway, we are advising drivers to follow the signed diversion route rather than their satnavs as there may be other roadworks in the area that could affect their journeys.
Where we are able to keep one lane open, we are asking drivers to focus on the road, not the roadworks, to help keep themselves and our workers safe.
The scheme is due to be completed by the end of October.
In the event that Operation Stack is implemented during the roadworks period, they will be suspended for its duration.
