Commenting on the introduction of a price on carbon by the Australian Government, UK Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change Edward Davey said:
“I very much welcome today’s introduction of a price on carbon by the Australian Government. While it is for each country to determine the appropriate mechanism for addressing climate change, it is heartening to see Australia joining the growing list of countries which are taking meaningful action to cut their carbon emissions.
“Australia’s actions are a real boost to international momentum towards a global, binding climate treaty by 2015, the goal agreed at the UN’s Durban conference last December. There have been other significant moves, too. In the last couple of months alone, the Korean parliament passed an emissions trading scheme, and Mexico passed comprehensive climate legislation.
“These countries recognise, as we do in the UK, that it is not a matter of growth versus action on climate change. The economies which are powering ahead - Germany, China, Korea, Brazil - are precisely those which are investing most in low carbon industries.
“I look forward to working with Australia as we head towards the next UN climate change conference in Qatar in November.”
