Eight Filipinos awarded Chevening Scholarships as up to 30 slots announced for SY 2015-16
Eight scholars from the Philippines have won the opportunity to join the British Government’s Chevening Scholarship programme in 2014/15.
British Ambassador Asif Ahmad congratulated the scholars at a send-off reception at his official residence. They are: Maharlika Alonto, Armi Bayot, Evangeline Co, Albert Domingo, Anna Oposa, Junefe Payot, Marie Tanya Recalde and Carlos Ely Tingson. They will study a wide range of courses, including in healthcare, Islamic finance, environment, socio-economic development, law and information and cyber security.
Awarded to outstanding individuals with leadership potential, a Chevening Scholarship offers financial support for a Master’s level degree beginning September 2015 at one of the UK’s leading universities. The British Government’s commitment to helping develop future leaders globally has been underlined by a major additional investment in the Chevening programme over the next two years. An additional 1500 places will be available globally and this will translate in to a trebling of scholars from the Philippines next year.

Today this is one of my favourite tasks as Ambassador. Chevening helps unlock potential in people that can make them and their countries better. This year’s batch are a credit to themselves, their families and their country. I’m sure you will be hearing lots more from them in the future. And Chevening grows from strength to strength. 2015-16 will be our biggest group of scholars yet from the Philippines, helped by private sector partners just as this batch is being supported by the Bank of the Philippine Islands,GlaxoSmithKline Philippines Inc, First Pacific Leadership Academy and San Miguel Corporation. While we celebrate this year’s group, I want people to apply now for scholarships in 2015-16. For all those people with intelligence and passion for making a difference in the Philippines, I would like them to apply for a Chevening scholarship. The competition is tough but I know that there is a wide range of talent from right across the Philippines.
Atty Michael Toledo, the newly-appointed president of the Chevening Alumni Foundation of the Philippines, was also present during the reception. There are about 300 Chevening alumni in the Philippines.
Applicants have until 15th November 2014 to submit their application. Awards are typically for a one-year Master’s degree, in any subject at any of the UK’s leading universities.
