Elections important moment for the Lebanese people
Ambassador Shorter met with PM Hariri and discussed the outcomes of CEDRE, the recent UK airstrikes on Syria and the upcoming parliamentary elections in Lebanon
British Ambassador to Lebanon Hugo Shorter met with Prime minister Saad Hariri this morning.
After the meeting Ambassador Shorter said:
As always it was an honour to meet Prime Minister Hariri.
We discussed the outcomes of the CEDRE conference. This is a major opportunity for Lebanon to attract significant foreign investment through the delivery of substantive reforms. The UK remains committed to supporting Lebanon on this process.
Though UK Minister for the Middle East Alistair Burt already spoke with Prime Minister Hariri at the weekend about the airstrikes in Syria at the weekend, today was an opportunity to explain why this targeted action was taken in response to the horrific chemical attack in Douma.
Looking ahead to the elections, I noted the role of the Supervisory Committee for Elections in ensuring proper implementation of the electoral law, especially the provisions designed to make a level playing-field for candidates, which is key for free and fair elections.
This is an important moment for Lebanon and for the Lebanese people.
