Environment Agency to hold drop-in event to discuss Bradwell discharges
A drop-in session is being held on Mersea Island to discuss the Environment Agency’s regulation of Bradwell Nuclear Power station.
A drop-in session is being held on Mersea Island to discuss the Environment Agency’s regulation of Bradwell Nuclear Power station and a new waste treatment process for the site which started last month.
The drop-in will take place on Tuesday 22 July from 2-7pm at the Mersea Centre, High Street, West Mersea, CO5 8QA.
The Environment Agency is the independent environmental regulator for nuclear sites in England. When it permits discharges to the environment it works with other authorities to ensure decisions are based on the most appropriate up to date advice and evidence.
Some of these authorities will also be at the drop-in, such as the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, Public Health England and the Office for Nuclear Regulation. Magnox, the site operator, will also be attending.
Charles Beardall, Environment Agency Area Manager said:
We appreciate that there are concerns in the community around the discharges into the Blackwater Estuary so we are inviting people to come along and talk to us. At the drop-in we will explain how we are regulating the Bradwell site and why we are confident that discharges from the site are safe.
The organisations currently confirmed to attend the drop-in are Magnox (the company responsible for decommissioning Bradwell), the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, the Office for Nuclear Regulation and Public Health England.
