Environment Agency to host public engagement drop-in session for First Avenue flood scheme
The scheme is designed to reduce flood risk in Pebble Mill area in Birmingham.

The Environment Agency is holding a drop-in session in Selly Park in Birmingham to talk with local residents about a flood risk management scheme planned for the area surrounding the Pebble Mill playing fields.
Residents will have the opportunity to ask questions and find out more about the scheme, as well as view and comment on the proposed designs. The scheme has been designed to better protect properties in the Birmingham area from flooding.
The drop-in session will be held at the Christ Church on Pershore Road in Selly Park, on 27 July from 4pm until 7pm.
Environment Agency officers in charge of the scheme will be available to explain the current design plans and to listen to feedback from local people.
A spokesperson for the Environment Agency said:
We’re pleased to be bringing a flood risk management scheme to Pebble Mill, better protecting the community from the risk of flooding.
We aim to start construction next spring. Part of these works involves constructing an embankment along the western and northern edge of Pebble Mill playing fields. This remains a complex and challenging scheme.
The plan is to hold and divert flood water back into the River Rea.

Background
The drop-in session is at Christ Church, 953 Pershore Road, Selly Park, Birmingham, B29 7PS.
- The embankment would gradually rise in height from Priory Avenue, following the outside edge of the fields and tying into First Avenue footbridge.
- Its footprint would be approximately 15 metres in width and just over 1.2 metres in height at the northern most point. It would be situated at least 10 metres in from the western edge of the fields.
- Wallace Road is the primary consideration to enable construction access to the playing fields due to the historic access gates present.
- This provides the least disruption to residents out of the options available. There are no plans to store anything on Wallace Road as the compound will be in the playing fields. Parking will remain available during construction.
- Use of the fields will be impacted during construction.
