Peter Boyd has been appointed as Expert Chair of the Energy Efficiency Deployment Office (EEDO), within the Department of Energy and Climate Change.

Peter spent over ten years working for the Virgin Group, including stints in New York and Johannesburg, and is currently the Chief Operating Officer for Carbon War Room, an independent global, non-profit that seeks to accelerate entrepreneurial solutions to profitable, ‘gigaton-scale’ reductions in carbon emissions.

Secretary of State, Edward Davey, said:

“I am delighted that Peter Boyd has been recruited to this important post. Peter will bring valuable experience in rolling out major programmes from his time with the Virgin Group to his current role at Carbon War Room, and I am very confident that he will make a major contribution to the energy efficiency agenda.”

The EEDO Chair will provide strategic guidance to Ministers, DECC Management Board and officials on the government’s energy efficiency objectives. He will also strengthen connections with stakeholders and communicate and promote the work of EEDO.

Minister of State, Gregory Barker, said:

“Peter brings great insight into the economic opportunities from tackling climate change, and how we unlock UK and global markets. I am delighted Peter is joining EEDO at this important time as we scale up our ambitions on energy efficiency.”

Peter Boyd said:

“Energy efficiency is not only central to tackling dangerous climate change but it is good for business. At the Carbon War Room, we have found this to be a multi-billion dollar global market opportunity. I look forward to helping increase EEDO’s positive impact as it takes forward this challenging and crucial agenda, and help seize the opportunity for the UK to lead the world in this area.”

Notes for editors

  1. EEDO was launched on 8 February 2012 with the objective of advancing energy efficiency across the UK economy. Energy efficiency is at the heart of the government’s approach to tackling dangerous climate change and ensuring safe, secure and affordable energy supplies. Energy efficiency is often the quickest and most cost effective solution, saving on energy bills, saving carbon and displacing more costly clean energy generation. Peter Boyd spent over ten years working for the Virgin Group, including stints in New York and Johannesburg. Peter started his career at McKinsey & Company (working in London, India and South Africa) after graduating from Oxford University with BA Honours in Philosophy, Politics & Economics. He is currently the Chief Operating Officer for Carbon War Room, an independent global, non-profit organisation that seeks to accelerate the deployment of entrepreneurial climate solutions at gigaton scale.
  2. The appointment will be a secondment, initially for two years. This is a part-time role up to four days per month.
  3. The Chair formally reports to the Director General for International Climate Change and Energy Efficiency.
