Farewell reception for Chevening Schorlarship Awardee 2013–2014
On Monday 16 September, the British High Commission hosted a farewell reception for this year's Chevening Scholar, Nurliyana Fatin Arifin.

Nurliyana Fatin Arifin who has been awarded a prestigious Chevening Scholarship for the 2013–2014 session will be pursuing her postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom this month. The farewell event was held at the Residence of the British High Commissioner to Brunei.

Nurliyana Fatin who currently works for Asia Inc Forum will be pursuing her Masters in Emerging Economies and International Development at King’s College London. She said:
Furthering my studies has always been a goal especially after serving in the private sector (with Asia Inc Forum) for over five years being involved in various spectrum including entrepreneurship, environmental sustainability, economic development and regional development.
I chose King’s College London because I am interested with the modules offered as the course not only focuses on international development but puts an emphasis on emerging economies that I find very important. Because Brunei is currently at this juncture of economic development and diversification, I feel that it is important to understand how Brunei will fare against the rise of new global economic and political players particularly the likes of China and India. ASEAN is also increasingly being seen as an important growth engine for Asia and Brunei, being the slowest growing economy in ASEAN stands to be a laggard. When I found King’s programme I was immediately stricken by their unique offering of looking into development models which got me thinking about how I could relate it back to Brunei. King’s approach of looking into the issues of inclusive development and the expansion of national productive capacities will help me develop my awareness on the issue and potential trade-offs in the sustainable development of an economy.

Fatin added:
This one year off from the working scene is a much awaited break to focus on what I could do better in the future. Getting Chevening is truly a great honour – it took several months to sink in that I am Chevening Scholar and this opportunity could not come at a better time! I do not know yet where my career will take me after this but I certainly hope to serve in the research field as that’s where my strength and interest are at.

Applications for the 2014/15 Chevening Scholarships are currently open for citizens and permanent residents of Brunei Darussalam. The ideal candidate would be in their early to mid career, with at least 2 years’ work experience and an excellent record of achievements which show evidence of leadership qualities. Applicants should be committed to returning and contributing to Brunei’s social and economic development by utilising skills and knowledge acquired in the UK.
