Following reports of fatalities in violence between protestors and police in Kyiv, the Minister for Europe David Lidington met the Ukrainian Charge d’Affaires today to underline his deep concern.

Mr Lidington, Minister for Europe, said:

All sides have a responsibility to refrain from violence and avoid actions that might inflame the situation further, and particular responsibility rests with the Ukrainian government and President Yanukovych.

The Ukrainian leadership needs to take swift action to address the fundamental causes of the current crisis and resolve differences through constructive and inclusive dialogue. President Yanukovych needs to match his stated commitment to democratic norms and values with action.
