FCO Director for Defence and International Security visits Egypt

FCO Director for Defence and International Security visited Cairo on 6 June to discuss disarmament, non-proliferation and arms control.

A senior delegation of Foreign and Commonwealth Office officials visited Cairo on 6 June to discuss disarmament, non-proliferation and arms control issues with the Egyptian Foreign Ministry and Arab League. The delegation was led by Sarah MacIntosh, Director for Defence and International Security in the FCO. The visit included discussions on the Middle East Weapons of Mass Destruction Free Zone conference process, and Arms Trade Treaty.

At the 2010 Non Proliferation Treaty Review Conference the UK, Russia, and the US, with the UN Secretary General undertook to convene a conference on the establishment of a Middle East free of nuclear weapons and all other weapons of mass destruction. The conference presents an important opportunity for states in the region to exchange views on the requirements for a Middle East free of all weapons of mass destruction and their means of delivery.
