FCO expresses concern over violence in DRC
Following the introduction of an electoral law in the parliament of the Democratic Republic of Congo, violent protests have taken place around the country since 19 January.
An FCO Spokesperson said:
The UK is concerned by the violent clashes in the Democratic Republic of Congo and urges calm and restraint from all parties. We offer our condolences to the families of those who have died.
The situation requires policing in accordance with the law and universal human rights standards, and for those who wish to exercise their rights to protest to do so peacefully.
We call on the Government and Parliament to listen to all views being expressed. We expect the electoral process to take place in accordance with the Constitution and look forward to the publication of an electoral calendar and budget soon to enable this.
